THE JIMMY FLYNN SHOW LIVE!

The Jimmy Flynn Show

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2016  7:30PM

Presented by:  LIVEact On The Road

There is only one rule at a Jimmy Flynn show – have a good time. And Jimmy is happy to report that everyone at his shows follows that rule.

“If there is one thing people have in common, it’s the need to laugh,” says Jimmy. “I know it’s been said many times, but I really believe that laughter is the best medicine. I know it works for me, and so far, it works for my audiences. When people come to my show, they have a good time.”

Jimmy has been in the “good time” business for over 30 years. He has given thousands of performances to audiences as diverse as his material. One day, he’s entertaining executives at a corporate retreat, the next day he’s leading a chorus of ten thousand foot-stomping fans in a packed stadium. No matter who they are, or what sort of a day they’ve had, as long as they follow his one rule, they have fun.

BRASS TRANSIT: THE MUSICAL LEGACY OF CHICAGO

Brass Transit - The Musical Legacy of Chicago

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2016  8PM

Presented by:  LIVEact On The Road

What happens when a cover band is actually better than the band that they’re imitating? That is most certainly the case with Brass Transit as they embody the music of Chicago.

The band features a stellar horn line that faithfully recreates the sophisticated arrangements of the original group. Guitarist Bob McAlpine shows incredible versatility, laying back for the quieter moments like “Call on Me,” then firing off searing licks that captured the spirit of original fret man Terry Kath, especially on their tremendous take of “Make Me Smile.” Drummer Paul Delong is a monster, even doing a wild drum solo during a medley of “I’m a Man” and “Free.”

The person that elevates the entire show into the stratosphere is vocalist Neil Donnell, whose multi-octave range had already graced several other Rockin’ Orchestra performances of the past.  Donnell nail's everything – he is gruff on “Color My World,” soars to dizzying heights on “Hard to Say I’m Sorry,” and is buoyant on “Saturday in the Park.” His range and depth is truly unparalleled.

Folks who have seen Chicago even 25 years ago, share they were nowhere near this good. Brass Transit lead a high-energy, hit-filled evening that is a must see.

PROGRAM ONE - LIGHT CLASSICS SERIES

Before winter firmly takes hold, enjoy “The Weather According to Vivaldi.”  Vivaldi’s timeless The Four Seasons is featured in OP’s opening concert.  Follow Vivaldi’s vision of what a year’s worth of weather can be – including Summer thunderstorms, barking dogs in Springtime, the crispness of Fall, and the austerity of Winter.   Although written in the 20th century, Ottorino Resphigi’s Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite No. 3 use dance forms from the 16th and 17th century, which create a fine marriage between ancient forms and modernist sensibilities.  While pleasing to the ear, these dances evoke simpler times and a graceful compositional style.  Arensky’s moving tribute to his mentor Tchaikovsky, Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky, was written one year after Tchaikovsky’s death and the theme is drawn from Tchaikovsky’s Sixteen Children’s Songs, Op. 54.  This evening of music is sure to keep you warm on a blustery November evening.

Mike Mandel - World's Greatest Living Hypnotist

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2016  8:00PM - 10:30PM

Mike Mandel's Hypnosis show is best described as "Comedy Meets High-Velocity Trance". Using nothing more than the power of suggestion and his rapier wit, Mike guides his volunteers through increasingly ludicrous mental excursions, each displaying a brilliant sense of imagination and creativity. They may fish for sharks, shovel snow from the stage, or discover that their clothing is inside-out, incredibly all while they are wide awake! Typically working with up to thirty volunteers from the audience, Mike Mandel is able to cause otherwise rational people to see, do, and believe, totally ridiculous things! Mike consistently provides an energetic, fascinating and hilarious demonstration of the incredible faculties of the human mind.

"Mike was fantastic - he has just gotten better, if that is possible. I have received many e-mails and phone calls from people who attended the show, and nothing but fantastic reviews!" - Barrie Construction Association

"Mandel is an intellectual and emotional arsonist, both igniting the spirit and enlightening the soul." - Algoma University

Ontario Philharmonic - Christmas at the Opera with Michael Ciufo

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2016  8:00PM

PROGRAM TWO – CHRISTMAS CLASSICS/LIGHT CLASSICS SERIES

Canadian Tenor, Michael Ciufo, joins OP for an evening of operatic and classical holiday favourites.  The evening begins on a sinister note with ballet music from Gounod’s Faust and famous tenor arias from such operatic favourites as La Traviata and Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet, as well as additional gems from the tenor song repertoire.   The second half of the program highlights recognizable music from the Classical Christmas canon.  Perennial favourites from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, a tenor excerpt from Handel’s Messiah, Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride are sure to put you in the holiday spirit.  And if that doesn’t work, then a few Christmas carols will be sure to dismiss the “humbug” in anyone.   It’s easy to see why OP stays off Santa’s “naughty list” with such spirited holiday programming.  Get your tickets as an early stocking stuffer.

ONTARIO PHILHARMONIC - DVORAK CELLO CONCERTO

Ontario Philharmonic - Dvorak Cello Concerto with William Molina Cestari

SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 2017  8:00PM

PROGRAM THREE – MASTERS SERIES

This evening consists of two pieces by Hungarian and Bohemian composers Franz Liszt and Antonin Dvorak.  Although Liszt was well-known and loved as a pianist, his place as a serious composer was more difficult to secure; however, the metaphysical and spiritual leanings that shaped his later life and contributed to his acceptance as a composer are found in his mid-career composition Les Preludes (Symphonic Poem 3). For the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 1, Liszt turned to his native Hungary for inspiration.  An innovator, Liszt is credited with inventing the symphonic poem and the use of the word rhapsody in a musical way to define a narrative, story-like quality he insisted he found in the original folk songs that form the basis of his Hungarian Rhapsodies.  Bohemia’s most famous musical son, Antonin Dvorak, rounds out the program with his well-known Slavonic Dance No. 2 and the Cello Concerto in E minor - works that owe their genesis to the rhythms of the Slavonic language and Dvorak’s fierce national pride.

ONTARIO PHILHARMONIC - GREAT ARTESANS OF THE MELODY

Ontario Philharmonic - Great Artesans of the Melody: Beethoven and Schubert

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2017  8:00PM

PROGRAM FOUR - CHAMBER SERIES

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 90 is a pillar of the orchestral repertoire.   For a change of pace, OP presents an intimate arrangement of this symphony for wind nonet featuring OP’s wind section.  Beethoven’s inspired 7th Symphony was written in Teplice, Bohemia where the composer had taken up residence in hopes of a cure for his encroaching deafness. The work premiered December 8, 1813 in Vienna with the maestro himself at the podium and was incredibly so well received that movements had to be repeated two and three times to satisfy audience demand.  It found its place in the audience’s heart that night, a place it has never let go.  Franz Schubert was a devoted disciple of Beethoven and it should come as no surprise that one of his greatest chamber works, the String Quintet in C major is identified by musicologists as homage to Beethoven in its form and construction.  Expansive, melodic, at times tranquil, this chamber piece makes the five instruments that make up the quintet sound symphonic in nature and scope – something that would likely have made Beethoven proud.

ONTARIO PHILHARMONIC - FOR THE LOVE OF MOZART!

Ontario Philharmonic - For the Love of Mozart

SATURDAY, APRIL 29, 2017  8:00PM

PROGRAM SIX – MASTERS SERIES

OP’s final program is a triple shot of Mozart – 2 piano concertos with two pianists, Maria Sourjko and Jean Desmarais and a symphony.

On May 17, 1784 Mozart’s expense book reveals the purchase of a European starling from a Viennese pet shop for 34 Kreutzer (about 38 cents). The birds are known for uncommon abilities to mimic musical patterns. Mozart’s soon learned to ‘tweet’ several measures from the Finale of the Piano Concerto No. 17 – brings new meaning to “twitter”.

In 1967, Swedish film, Elvira Madigan garnered awards from Cannes Film Festival and Golden Globe Awards. The soundtrack was taken directly from the Andante movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21. The entire work has been nicknamed the “Elvira Madigan” concerto as a result. The film is long forgotten: the music remains one of the most recognizable melodies.

Mozart’s ‘Haffner’ started life as a commissioned piece for Marie Haffner’s wedding, daughter of Salzburg’s mayor. As a result, it became known as the ‘Haffner Serenade’, a hugely popular work originally scored in eight movements in 1776.  It took until 1782 for the Haffner Symphony as we know it to emerge - a work of unparalleled grandeur.
