Con man Harold Hill, pretending to be a professor of music, lands in River City where he convinces most of the townspeople that they have a problem with their youth. He persuades them into believing that what they need is a boys marching band. Taking money from the townfolks to purchase instruments, music and uniforms he plans to run with the cash when the supplies arrive. While the town's spinster music teacher & librarian does not trust him, he uses her withdrawn younger brother to get her to trust in him and in doing so starts falling for her. Having conned many other towns and causing many salesmen to suffer from his cons, several have found following his sales route catch up with him and expose his antics.
