THE MOVIES - AI & CLIMATE CHANGE

THE MOVIES - AI & CLIMATE CHANGE
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2025  6:00PM

Presented by Faculty of Social Science and Humanities in Association with Invest Durham

FREE EVENT *Tickets Required

Please join us for a FREE screening and panel discussion with industry professionals that grapple with how movies have contributed to—and are altering their relationship with—AI and climate change to meet these colossal forces.

Motion pictures are at an inflection point. Forced to weigh the potential benefits and detriments of artificial intelligence at the same time that it must confront its own contributions to climate change, moviemaking must simultaneously confront these technological and environmental challenges both in the stories they tell and the ways in which they tell them.

FILM DESCRIPTIONS

What the Hell
(Valerie Barnhart, 2024): Dante's Hell, once the epitome of human suffering and punishment, faces an existential crisis: it loses its relevance on 21C Earth. Charlotte, a sharp-witted Harpy, is determined to set the terms of her own fate by breaking free of her employment in Danté's obsolete Inferno. But not before her ex boyfriend Asterion tries to win her back. Can she reach the promise of a future in a New Hell on Earth before Hell crumbles into oblivion? A contemporary love story for the end times, a horror comedy based on the current state of world affairs.

Losing Blue (Leanne Allison, 2023): What does it mean to lose a colour? Losing Blue is a cinematic poem about losing the otherworldly blues of ancient mountain lakes, now fading due to climate change. With stunning cinematography, this short doc immerses the viewer in the magnificence of these rare lakes, pulling us in to stand on their rocky shores, witness their power and understand what their loss would mean—both for ourselves and for the Earth.

The Living Machine, Part 1 (Roman Kroitor, 1962): Part 1 demonstrates the capacities of a computer's "artificial intelligence," far exceeding that of any one human brain.

Psychoterra (Emily Pelstring & Naomi Okabe, 2025): Two scientists from the Technomystic Ecology Lab develop technology that processes the ecological grief contained within a database of audio testimonials. In their lab, located deep inside a cave, they alchemize these feelings into a seed archive for an unknown future.

*BONUS* Several 'surprise' short films will also be presented in addition to the list above.
